Jonjo O'Neill
The Story of a Champion Jockey

As a National Hunt jockey, Jonjo Senior won over nine hundred races. He twice won the British Champion Jockey title and is perhaps most famous for winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup on the legendary mare, Dawn Run, becoming the only horse to win both the Champion Hurdle and the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival.

Jonjo is also reknowned for his tactical ride on Sea Pigeon to win the Champion Hurdle in 1980, the winning race colours of which are reflected in the O’Neill Racing brand today.

Testimonial
Jonjo O’Neill is not just a very special man, he is a special trainer too. To visit him and the team at Jackdaws Castle has been one of the pleasures of a lifetime. Mind you, he has lived at least three lives already!

The story of a legendary trainer

After retiring from the saddle, Jonjo has gone on to train with huge success. He moved to Jackdaws Castle near Temple Guiting in 2001 and has since won the Grand National with Don’t Push It, as well as the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Synchronised.

He has also produced twenty-six more Cheltenham Festival winners, including Iris’s Gift, Albertas Run, Taquin Du Seuil, More Of That, Wichita Lineman, and Sky Pirate. Additionally, he has trained winners at Royal Ascot and won the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle. He is now sharing his licence with AJ and together they are striving to achieve even further success for O’Neill Racing.
