Winter Has Arrived!

Very warm wishes to you all… which are needed after this very cold spell of snowy weather!

For us, November is when the National Hunt season really gets going with softer ground. However, this year was a little different as the first half of the month, we were all crying out for some rain. I can’t remember the last November Meeting at Cheltenham being run on good ground!

This has, naturally, meant we haven’t been able to run some of our horses who like it softer. Last week’s snow was followed by Storm Bert which will help soften the ground around the country, and we all know what the Great British weather is like so it probably won’t stop raining until February!

With that said, we have had plenty of runners and they have all been running well, thank god.

And, on top of that, we have had lots of really lovely winners including a Grade 2 success with the ever-improving Roadlesstravelled at Haydock and a nice Cheltenham winner with Wreckless Eric that gave AJ his first Cheltenham winner as a trainer!

We finished October with Sayva winning very impressively at Newcastle, which was followed up with Genois, Itso Fury and Roadlesstravelled winning at Wetherby and Bill Joyce making a perfect start over hurdles at Carlisle.

It was great to see Magic Seven win at Exeter, Impatient finally getting his nose in front at Ffos Las and Mister Meggit impressing us on his debut over obstacles at Aintree.

We’re Red And Blue continued his good form with a victory at Carlisle, Rula Bula secured a commanding win at Market Rasen and Playtogetway won well at Southwell.

You can read all about these below.

Looking ahead, it’s Coral Gold Cup (formerly the Hennessy) weekend at Newbury. We have Iron Bridge entered in the Trevor Hemmings colours that Cloth Cap carried to a memorable and emotional victory in the race in 2021. It was a race that Trevor loved so fingers crossed that we go well again this year.

Off the track, we were busy at the sales in Newmarket, Cheltenham and Arqana. We were delighted to have secured some really nice horses which we are excited to offer to you if you would like to get involved or if you are thinking of treating yourself or somebody else to an early Christmas present! Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us to find out more at joe@oneill.racing.

We wish you all a lovely weekend.

Best wishes and take care,

Jonjo & AJ

Snow at Jackdaws Castle

Being one of the highest points in the Cotswolds, if there is snow around, we are sure to get it. However, it has been a while since we have seen it in mid November!

An interesting fact that we tell all of our stable tour visitors is that the next highest point east of Jackdaws Castle are the Ural Mountains in Russia!

Luckily the snow wasn’t that deep and we could continue as normal.

Well done to our brilliant team for their hard work through the inclement weather.

When Ownership and Charity Collide

Did you know that our wonderful Tanzanite Partnership, who own Mt Fugi Park, Boston Boy and and Circuit Breaker, support the wonderful Pied Piper Appeal with their winnings.

The Pied Piper charity’s vision is to improve the quality of life, well-being and social development of any sick or disabled child in Gloucestershire, by raising the level of care and providing access to quality services so children do not need to travel out of the county unnecessarily and focusing on supporting the whole family.

We invited Katy and Kerry from the charity to come and meet the horses and two of their owners, David and Jo.

Katy said:

“On behalf of the Pied Piper Appeal we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the incredible support provided by O’Neill Racing and their Owners’ Club. The commitment to donate 10% of the winnings from Circuit Breaker, Boston Boy, and Mt Fuji Park to the Pied Piper Appeal is a testament to your generosity and community spirit.

As Gloucestershire’s leading children’s charity, founded in 1992, the Pied Piper Appeal is dedicated to improving the lives of sick and disabled children in and around Gloucestershire. Each year, we strive to raise funds to address the many requests we receive for support. Thanks to partnerships like yours, we are able to continue our mission to make a meaningful difference in four key areas:

  • Funding Gloucestershire Royal Hospital’s Children’s Centre and other county hospitals, supplying essential equipment to enhance care and comfort.
  • Supporting Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) schools with resources and transportation to help children thrive.
  • Providing Wish Holidays for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families, creating lasting memories during challenging times.
  • Improving experiences at mental health facilities by ensuring safe and welcoming environments for young patients.

Your backing adds significant momentum to our efforts. Every contribution, driven by the success of your horses, directly impacts these vital initiatives. We deeply admire O’Neill Racing’s passion for both the sport and the well-being of our Gloucestershire children.

Please know that this partnership will not only provide much-needed funding but also inspire others to join us in championing the cause. Together, we can continue to deliver hope, joy, and opportunities to children and families in need.

On behalf of me and Kelly at the Pied Piper Appeal Team and the countless children whose lives will be touched by your generosity, thank you for making a difference. We look forward to celebrating many more successes together, both on the track and in our mission to support Gloucestershire’s children.”

David continued:

“Jo and I were delighted to represent the Tanzanite Partnership in meeting Katy and Kerry of Pied Piper. It reinforced our view on what a fantastic job they do in helping to improve the lives and experiences of sick and disabled children and their families in the county. We are very happy that a portion of the partnership’s winnings is contributing to such a good cause.”

A visit from Hercules Site Services

O’Neill Racing was delighted to recently host Hercules Site Services and their colleagues for their corporate morning here at Jackdaws Castle.

Hercules is a leading tech enabled labour supply company for the UK infrastructure sector. Our yard sponsor Martin Tedham, owner and Chairman of the Wasdell Group is an investor and board member of Hercules.

Martin was keen to have Hercules’ corporate morning at Jackdaws Castle which can facilitate private corporate mornings engaging with stakeholders and colleagues alike whilst also enjoying some time out with the horses.

Everyone enjoyed networking and catching up over an exquisite Champagne breakfast, followed by all the guests getting up close to the action on the gallops and getting a tour around Jackdaws Castle estate and all of its’ amazing facilities.

We wish Martin and Hercules Site Services all the best for the future with their exciting growth trajectory.

Below are some pictures of their corporate morning.
